The $64 Tomato'' by William Alexander is just the thing to take our minds off our own garden woes while waiting for the planting beds to dry out enough that seeds won't wash away or rot in the ground.
As its name implies, "The $64 Tomato'' is not a how-to garden book. It is, rather, a wry memoir in which every reader who's spent way more to grow a plant than he could purchase it for at the supermarket will recognize his own successes, failures and foibles.

My only quarrel with this engaging rainy-day read is that it's the book I should have written. The royalties might have brought the cost of my tomatoes down to $64 each.
